Fashion loves a rabbit: it's been a thing for years

by

If you don't know who Cecil Delevingne is yet, frankly you're way behind on your Instagram homework and you need to pull your socks up. Cecil is a rabbit – a rabbit with his own social media account and a very famous owner (or 'Mumma', as Cara apparently prefers). He is quite literally a fashion bunny.

What you might not know is that a pet rabbit is not a 'new trend' or 'the accessory of the month', regardless of what the tabloids say. First of all, that's because it's a living creature. But secondly, Cecil actually joins an esteemed and long-established crowd of rabbits in the fashion industry. First there was Love magazine editor-in-chief Katie Grand's bunny, Clara, who has her very own Twitter account.

Clara is, of course, extremely well-connected. She regularly visits Giles Deacon's studio for what some might call 'babysitting', and others might consider a luxury mini-break.

And then there's Latrice, the delightful rabbit of The Independent's fashion editor Alexander Fury.

As far as we're aware, Latrice doesn't have his own online presence. Probably too busy.

So in conclusion: fashion rabbits are multiplying like rabbits. The question we ask today is whether this could be something other than a coincidence. Could it be that Katie Grand, bunny fanatic, is using her considerable influence in the fashion industry to push the furry little blighters on all her stylish friends?

Alternatively, is there something about floppy, outsized ears that just happens to be very appealing to fashion people? Or – since fashion doesn't tend to be a very sentimental industry – is someone planning to get these rabbits together and make themselves a fabulous coat?

Stick close to Mumma, Cecil.

Update: It is all down to Katie Grand! Alexander Fury tells us: 'I actually took Latrice home after a Love magazine shoot – we had two rabbits. Giles Deacon now has the other.' No word on whether Katie had anything to do with Cara's new pet, though.

Anyone interested in buying their own bunny should know that Alex has only good words to say about the animals: 'They're sort of the perfect pets. No noise, no mess, no smell. They moult a bit. Katie's rabbit Clara likes burrowing through cushions. And Latrice has a penchant for chewing expensive shoes. As long as I don't leave any on the floor it's fine. I do now have a pair of Burberry shoes with a scalloped "nibble detail" edging to the tongue, though.'
