Considering the amount of scrutiny a star faces when they walk the red carpet, you can forgive those famouses for often playing it safe. Would you be willing to stray from the classics when put in the fashion firing line?

Wherever there are rules though, they'll most certainly be broken and a handful of red carpet rebels regularly stop all over them at events. Do you think Celine Dion gave a hoot what Joan Rivers had to say about her backwards Galliano suit at the 1999 Oscars? She laughed in the face of the worst dressed lists no doubt. And speaking of suits, it's clear who wears the trousers in the scrutiniser and subject relationship when it comes to two-piece loving Angelina Jolie, and those trousers are impeccably tailored Saint Laurent, more often than not. 

With Cannes about the kick off, the slightly more carefree summer leg of the red carpet season, you could say, we can't wait to see how far the boundaries of formal dressing get pushed this year, but for now, let's celebrate the rebels of yore, from Chloe Sevigny to Bjork, and of course perennial dress-code ignorer, Cher.
