What the Frock: Carine Roitfeld

What is specifically so lovely about this look is her attention to detail and use of subtle hues. The creased dusty beige pleating of the skirt contrasts pleasingly with the crisp white tailoring of her blazer. Minimal makeup, and well-kept yet unkempt hair echo that refined but relaxed look. Here, as ever, Carine is a fine representative of contemporary chic. She reflects a brand of dressing that seems so innate, instinctive and very French. I do approve!

I like to think I'm too cool to get starstruck but when I ended up on a Eurostar with Carine Roitfeld a couple of years ago, I couldn't stop staring. How does she do it, I wondered as I surveyed her seemingly simple style. It has something to do with proportion and ensuring that everything – sleeves, hemlines, necklines – hits at exactly the right point. It has something to do with being toned and tanned. And it has a lot to do with attitude. She always, always nails it.

Carine is my fantasy fashion icon – she's the woman who looks fantastic in everything I'd look bloody awful in. A white hip-grazing blazer would make most women look like a Smithfield butcher, but on her it's chic, flattering and effortlessly sexy. Nude heels are practically my worst fashion item, but Carine makes me covet a pair. Also, she appears to be wearing no bra, something I'd kill to be able to do. Life is horribly unfair.
