Insider: Jelena Ristic
What really goes on behind the scenes? Industry experts share their knowledge
Tennis WAGs are of a chicer inclination than the football variety. Between offering court-side support to her tennis-player boyfriend Novak Djokovic and indulging her inner philanthropist promoting child education charity, the Novak Djokovic Foundation, Jelena Ristic has created an edit of flattering-yet-glamorous swimwear and beach cover-ups, including dresses and kaftans, for Figleaves. On a whistle-stop Wimbledon trip, we spoke to her about her heroes, how to bag the best bikini, and what she can't live without this summer.
Who has the coolest style on the tennis court?
The serbian tennis player, Anne Ivanovic. I think her style is very ladylike and gentle, both on and off the court. For the guys, of course, I'd go with, Novak Djokovic. His character's great, and I love that he's very expressive, so his clothes can be very simple, but he wears them in a cool way.
Who are your style icons?
I'm not really tied to any particular image or style. How I dress is more dependent on my mood.
What's your top tip for choosing swimwear?
You have to understand your body to understand what fits you well. I feel like you are the one person who can know exactly what looks good, and if you're following someone else's trends and tips and it doesn't flatter your body then it won't work. You just have to be honest with yourself.
What are your top summer beauty tips?
Drink a lot of water to hydrate your body and skin, keep it nourished. Always go for suncream because it's not good to burn, and a hat for sun protection too. I love Kerastase products for hair. You think it's easier to pack for summer, but then again, half your suitcase is cosmetics!
If you could only take five things on a beach holiday what would they be?
Always my phone - the work follows. A Kindle so I can have a choice of things to read, suncream, a hat and water.
What would be your dream summer destination?
The Maldives. I like the fact that you can have privacy as we don't get much all year - it's like Robinson Crusoe. I like the peacefulness and that you get everything – good food, a lot of activities and water sports, the sun and the warm sea.
What were you looking for when working on your Figleaves edit?
I'm always on the run so I wanted outfits that were practical. I feel really glamorous in the sheer black skirt and matching swimsuit, which is not normally the case for me on the beach, I usually just go for comfort. I always like to cover myself, so kaftans and shirts were important. All of the pieces make you feel confident and comfortable, which is important in the summer.
What are your favourite swimwear and lingerie brands?
Seafolly for beachwear, and I love Elle McPhearson for lingerie. I think her pieces are really simple and always a great fit. There's a huge range so there's always something I like. Victoria's Secret really get mix and match so they're really practical and cheap.
Who do you admire the most?
My heroes are mostly people who are very philanthropic, who have achieved something in their life but then decided it's time to do something for other people. I really admire dame stephanie shirley, the UK ambassador of philanthropy. She was sent to the UK because of the holocaust when she was four or five and was adopted immediately by a British family. Today she's one of the most successful and powerful women in the world, and she's donated more than 100 million of her money to charity. I had a chance to talk with her and she's really inspirational, it's really fantastic that she really fights for philanthropy to become something that's part of everyone's lives and I would like to do something like that myself.
