What the Frock: Sofia Coppola
Our panelists on the latest and greatest celebrity looks

Long before she married a Frenchman, Sofia nailed that French thing of dressing sexy while not revealing any obviously sexy bits. She looks like she knows a secret that she could share with you, but, let's face it – she won't. I think that's what they mean when they talk about allure. (When I try and dress like this I look like I know twelve secrets and I've just told them all to the entire staff of a kebab shop.)

Sofia must have a hundred two-tone collar, below-the-knee dresses like this one. It’s very pretty. One of those dresses that look much better in person than in pictures where it looks a unfairly underwhelming. As an aside, in reality Perspex heels quickly get fugged up with condensation. It must have been a cool night.

Ever since a girl I was interested in told me, just over a decade ago now, that it's physically impossible to wear white and black simultaneously without looking like some or all of a chessboard, I've resisted the combination. But Sofia Coppola forces me to re-evaluate that. There is something impossibly dainty about her look: the frock collar, the frills at the bottom of her dress, the see-through neckline. It's combines schoolgirl chic with Hollywood glamour, which is the least you'd expect of the only daughter of the man who directed The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. The obligatory shiny purse completes the effect, off-setting the thumping block shades of white and black with a stylish distraction. All told, it's about as far from a chessboard as you can imagine and my only regret is not seeing such a look all those years ago.
