Alex Brownsell opens up about her obsession with Sharpie hair dyeing

The queen of bleach talks Coachella, felt tips and what look she’ll be sporting for Glastonbury this year

‘I was at Coachella when this was taken. It was in 2011. We’d been watching Kanye West and then after the festival we went to this club nearby. It was quite late and I was drunk! I did the colour with felt tip pens. Sharpie’s, actually. My hair was fully white and then I just drew some patterns on it with the pens. They’re easy because they wash out after a couple of washes or so.

After the felt tip stint I had quite a bit of damage and breakage. Luckily it was around the time that Bumble & Bumble brought out their Mending Mask, which helped no end. I also love Philip Kingsley Elasticizer – it’s my favourite. I use a Babyliss Diffuser on my hair because I don’t like to blow dry it or use straighteners and this works really well. It makes it more natural-looking.

I mostly do pink washes in my hair – of all the colours I think it fades out the nicest. I use Fudge Whiter Shade Of Pale to dye it a pale, white shade first. It’s really nourishing which I like. I’m inspired by Chloe Norgaard’s hair – it’s always full of crazy colours. And Abbey Lee Kershaw’s hair is such an incredible shade.

For Glastonbury this year I might go back to the Sharpie’s! Or I might do two half colours – one side in Fudge Pink Moon and the other side in their Blue Hawaii shade. I usually mix these with conditioner though so it’s a bit more washed out. I’ll be heading to watch The Rolling Stones.’
