Shoe designer Kat Maconie on her obsession with Escentric Molecule

by

The woman behind the seminal shoe line tells us why she’s unfailingly monogamous with her choice of scent.

'I have long loved Escentric Molecules, Molecule 01. I discovered it about 5 years ago when I was working on the buying and product development team at Whistles. The trims buyer and I popped into Start Boutique in Shoreditch which was just around the corner from the Whistles head office at the time and Brix Start, the owner, convinced us both there and then to buy a bottle. We were both so taken with it because of its unique pheromones. It’s a very subtle scent but smells quite velvety/woody although it’s mysterious enough that you can’t really tell exactly what its notes are. Even so, it’s a smell that’s instantly recognisable on anyone who wears it.

I really love the effect it has on others, it’s incredible - people always ask what I am wearing when I am out at night or even just day to day. I was on a date once and the guy I was dating asked me what my scent was and then went out and bought a bottle. He was wearing it on the following date! In fact quite a few of my friends wear it now too, both male and female as it’s really one of those scents that isn’t for one or the other. I don’t mind that my friends now wear it as I love the smell – it’s really subtle - you can’t really smell it on yourself, only on others - it’s not over powering like other fragrances can be. I am totally monogamous with my scents and never chop and change – Escentric Molecules is the only one for me! I just apply a light spritz in the morning and then will reapply it in the evening if I am going out.'
