10 beauty moments you didn't spot in Clueless the first time round
Two decades on, there's still so much to love in Clueless. In fact, you probably didn't even catch it all the first time around. So let us refresh your memory of the best hairstyles, make-up and beauty moments with a walk down memory lane – via Beverly Hills.
1. Tai's Coke-can-as-hair-roller.
Tai is, as Cher puts it, 'so adorably clueless'. But when we see her with the Coke can in her hair during the makeover scene, we know that she's now in safe hands. It's all about root uplift at the top, Tai. If you were an original Beverly Hills girl, you'd totally know that by now.
Note that Cher and Dionne have eschewed a Diet Coke can in favour of the real deal. From this we can only conclude that 'fat Coke' gives more volume.
2. Murray's braces – seen here as he screams for his life when Dionne accidentally drives onto the freeway.
Yes, Murray likes to 'keep it real' (that's why he shaves his head). But as any good LA boy knows, keeping it real doesn't have to extend to your teeth. Crooked teeth are not a good look. With these braces, Murray can be confident that he'll have a Hollywood smile by the time he gets out of high school (and graduates to Scrubs).
3. Cher's date look. We wouldn't generally encourage you to emulate Barbie, but if you're going to do it then you might as well do it amazingly well. Behold:
Pink eyeshadow, pink lipstick and pink blusher – finished off with some heavy duty black mascara and a bejewelled hair clip. Since this is a date that involves Christian coming round to watch a movie, we can only assume it's Cher's casual look, and yet she looks like a finalist in a beauty pageant.
If Christian wasn't, as Murray puts it, 'an Oscar Wilde-reading, Streisand-ticket-holding friend of Dorothy', there's no way he could have resisted this.
4. Amber's extreme hair creativity.
Ambular: those mindbogglingly long ringlets look like they took an awful lot of trouble. Especially since (a) you have short hair, and (b) you did them for a gym class in which you can't participate anyway, because your plastic surgeon doesn't want you doing any activity where balls fly at your nose.
Moving on to Look #2: This bob is a lot more conventional, but the red sailor's hat with $ emblem really makes it your own. What's the message here? Ahoy, money ahead?
The next one is just a feat of insane engineering. Do you have pipe-cleaners in there? Whatever it is, Dionne wants it out of her face.
And finally, a classroom look that we can only describe as wigtastic. Amber, the furry hairband is not enough to distract us.
[Side note: this was the beginning of us doing 'Whatever' hands behind our parents' backs, which continued for the rest of our teenage years.]
5. Tai's 'finding the real me' hair.
It's a truth rarely acknowledged that the 'Ta-da!' moment does not mark the end of a makeover. Because after you've been restyled à la Cher and Dionne, and you've started hanging out with the cool kids – that's when you enter a serious period of readjustment. It's not until some time later that your new look shakes down into something that's more you. And in Tai's case, we know the makeover is complete when she goes to watch Travis skateboarding.
Tai's 'real me' look takes a little of her original grunge and a little of Cher's class and combines them into this very cute pigtails and T-shirt combo. Plus, that is a face of love. She wanted the skateboarder with the bong all along!
6. Dionne's ribboned braids at the Valley party. Not only does she look great, but this is also an excellent way to get your boyfriend's attention when you're shouting at him for shaving his head. How could he do this? And right before the yearbook pictures! What is she going to tell her grandchildren?
7. Cher's nerdy night-in-with-Josh hair. In a teen movie, the only way to prove that you're not an airhead is by putting on some sensible clothes and taking off your make-up. Cher does this valiantly for a sofa flirting session with Josh: she dons a lilac twinset and pins her hair back in a goofy half-ponytail, the likes of which you generally save for days when you're definitely not seeing the boy you fancy.
As it turns out though, nerdy hair is exactly what Josh is looking for.
8. Summer's blink-and-you'll-miss-em reindeer hair bobbles. When she arrives to suggest a game of Suck and Blow at the Valley party, Summer has her hair in two long bunches, fastened with cuddly reindeers.
Though it is not Christmas and she is not seven years old, this still sort of looks cool. Don't believe us? Watch the party scene for a closer look.
9. Dionne's nose ring. Maybe you wouldn't think of Clueless as a piercings kind of a movie, but Dionne put her own stamp on the Beverly Hills look with her nose ring.
OK, so she needs to learn to take her nose ring out when her allergies act up – but until then, we're loving her style. She also has the best facial expressions in the whole movie.
10. Cher's happy-ending princess curls.
Lonely Cher favoured a floaty, posh-girl blow-dry – kind of like a blonde Pippa Middleton. Loved-up Cher expresses her joy with these romantic curls, which are the very essence of the 90s bridesmaid, and must have taken a hell of a lot of mousse.
They're also a great distraction from the fact that she's going out with her former stepbrother. But we're not going to talk about that.
No, Cher: we need lessons from you.
