BAFTA nominations signal homage to the humble corkscrew

by

When the BAFTA nominations for Best Actress went out this morning we gave a knowing smile. How could Amy Adams, and more importantly, that deluge of auburn corkscrew curls in American Hustle, not be worthy of an award? Her hair OWNS that film. On set, Head of Make-up, Katherine Gordon told Allure that she always had two irons set up so that anyone who passed by her trailer could try their hand at a corkscrew or two. ‘Come on down! It’s a game show. Grab that iron and start curling.’

In a parallel universe somewhere in 1989, Nicole Kidman was in a similar position with a nomination (albeit it for a lesser-hyped Saturn award) for her role in nautical thriller Dead Calm. Her corkscrew explosion was natural, but no less show-stopping, especially teamed with her pre-Raphaelite complexion, blue-grey eyes and brows as yet untouched by the Hollywood machine.

While the majority of hair at the Spring Summer 2014 shows erred on the straight side, we’re taking this morning’s news as an omen that the corkscrew perm, preferably in a shade of shocking red, is ripe to infiltrate popular culture for a well-deserved renaissance. We’re wishing Amy, and her wig, the best of British.
