Jessica Lange for Marc Jacobs - the latest 60-something beauty signing
Just yesterday we reported on the news that Charlotte Rampling, at 68 years old, is set to become the new face of Nars. Now word has reached us via social media that actress Jessica Lange, 64, will star as the face of Marc Jacobs Beauty in a campaign shot by David Sims - the above shot of Lange sporting a softly smoked eye and peachy coral lip was posted on the brand's official Twitter feed last night.
When two internationally giant cosmetics brands announce 60-something muses in the space of two days, what does that tell us? Well, certainly, that the pro-ageing movement is gaining momentum, and not just in the fashion industry. It also hints at an acknowledgment of the buying power of a group of women, who maybe previously, have felt marginalised by the blatantly youth-obsessed beauty industry.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves, these are baby steps, not a sea change in the way that beauty brands peddle their products. These campaigns are for make-up, not skincare, and so it figures that colour can transcend any age group whereas a youth boosting serum relies, if we're honest, on somebody with plump, pillowy skin to sell it. Nonetheless, the signs of change are encouraging. Any migration towards an acceptance of something different, imperfect even, in an industry obsessed with striving for perfection are wholly encouraging for anyone who ever worried about getting a wrinkle.
