The beauty icons of the 80s
The beauty icons of the 80s
Some say the 80s was the decade that taste forgot, but I would argue that on the contrary, this was a time when fashion and beauty broke free of all constraints, where quite literally, anything went. There were so many different ways to be beautiful in the 1980s. Unlike the 60s where one or two looks defined the times, in the 80s you could be inspired by a hugely diverse range of women (and men – shout out to Boy George!)
The 80s spawned rampant consumerism, Gordon Gekko and ‘greed is good’, Page 3 and MTV. But punks, goths, New Romantics and hair metallers rubbed (big) shoulder with the yuppies. You could be camp and glam like Joan Collins, coolly androgynous like Annie Lennox, girl-next-door pretty like Phoebe Cates or subversive like Siouxsie Soux.
I put it to you that the 80s was the most colourful, creative time for beauty, where diversity ruled and there was infinitely more variety than exists today. Don’t believe me? Then click through the gallery of 50 beauty icons of the 80s and you’ll soon be convinced.
