Is Nirvana fashion's favourite band?

by

It's not just Hedi Slimane's revisiting of grunge for Saint Laurent or mega-cool salon Bleach's typographic homage that prove that Nirvana is one of the fashion industry's favourite bands. Or the fact that Topshop are currently stocking a Nirvana T-shirt...

Further confirmation came last night when the grunge pioneers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and replacing the late Kurt to smash out some of the band's biggest hits alongside original members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic were women who are not only huge music stars in their own right, but one whose style you would most definitely want to base your wardrobe on.

Australian newcomer Lorde, performing All Apologies, gave us more reason to believe there's more to her than being a teen pop sensation as she nailed the cover in a slouchy pink suit, like a skateboarding Daria for Céline, updated for summer 2014.

St Vincent's Annie Clark too, performing Lithium, continued to shine as fashion's anti-hero with her wild silvered hair and a painterly tunic. As she tours her latest, eponymous album around Europe this summer, her stage looks are seriously worth keeping an eye on.

And let us not forget the singers whose style we've been channeling longer than we've had our eyes on Kurt's ripped jeans, Kim Gordon and Joan Jett who tore through versions of Aneurysm and Smells Like Teen Spirit with as much guttural force as the originals dressed in the styles we know and love them for.

Kim Gordon once again excelled in tomboyish cool in a jersey dress, while Joan Jett reminded us that she pretty much invented the rock chick in a biker jacket.

Looks like Nirvana's back catalogue and the women who still love to listen to them is all the fashion inspiration you need this summer.
