New face Kirstie gets Hamptons hair
The model faces of tomorrow meet the beauty trends of today, here, every week
I’m clinging on, for dear life. To summertime, that is. It’s proving rather tricky, what with the waning weather, new season overcoats in every shop window and talk of fashion week, but I’m clinging on with all my might. The one saving grace is that I’ve spotted a trend which transcends the seasons. And it’s that of perennially chic beach hair. You see, it’s definitely more of a summer trend and we saw it everywhere – EVERYWHERE – for spring/summer 2013: Gently tousled lengths at Burberry, more voluminous waves at Diane von Furstenberg, just about every which way you can possibly think of.
Luckily, beach hair didn’t die a complete death for autumn/winter 2013 shows – thank god. If anything, it got a touch more sophisticated. I think I prefer it a bit, for its much coy and coquettish nature. Think elegant Hamptons hair over anything too Tulum or Rio de Janiero. At Derek Lam it was caressed with subtle twists and turns; at Issa it was just a gentle hint of movement. You know, that nice soft bounce akin to Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon.
Fusing the two, and in keeping with my pangs of end-of-season no man’s land-ish-ness, comes Wella Ocean Spritz. And boy does it give good hair. It helped having Kirstie to try it on, a gorgeous young thing on the books at Storm. She’d just returned from a month in Zambia and was covered in African jewels (there’s some beaded tribal-style earrings hiding in there) – note the brass bangle. And as she told tales of trekking, camping in the wilderness and getting sick of lentil stew on day three, she praised the African sun for turning her hair slightly more golden – no word of a lie, there’s not a single highlight or ballyage stroke in there. The Ocean Spritz was sprayed generously into her lengths, dried roughly with a hot hairdryer and just like that, the grown-up beach hair waves that will get us all through this limbo.
