Clavicles are so hot right now

Don’t you just love it when a new erogenous zone comes in to fashion? Thighs and midriffs and bums, oh CRY. And we normally do.

But every so often one comes along that’s actually startlingly accessible. This season, the Gods of Fashion have graciously given us The Clavicle - an area of extreme femininity which is virtually impossible to put weight on.

Now that Game of Thrones Season 3 has finished we can look back and appreciate the fine shoulders of Cersie in her myriad shawl neckline gowns, and the off-shoulder look is even further elevated in our esteem thanks to Cheryl Cole’s latest barefaced l’Oreal ad.

We couldn’t help but notice the clavicle’s stealth rise on the catwalks in February, starting with Christopher Kane’s homage to the shoulder in a series of cocktail dresses that brought the new sexy back, in exactly the same way as his seminal graduate collection did way back in 2006. It surfaced again at Miu Miu, and then at Prada in a prim-girl-ravished sort of way. An austere take on it featured at Celine and Valentino, and then reigning clavicle champion Sarah Burton - who’s been doing off-the-shoulder for years - rounded things off nicely at Alexander McQueen.

Ulyana Sergeenko's Cannes red carpet takeover did wonders to raise the trend's status further, bringing us straight back to the glamour of the New Look couture ateliers with those lightly rolled necklines. Indeed, bar that flounce period in the 1970s, the early 1950s and the late 1980s were the clavicle’s heydays. Screen sirens like Elizabeth Taylor and Bette Davis brandished theirs in black and white, then in the late 1980s Princess Diana pretty much owned the look – which is possibly why nobody has dared to do it since. Except Kate Moss.

Do you dare rise to the challenge and bear the weight of the fashion world on your shoulders?
