Gaga does a Westwoood - turns her face into a canvas
Say what you like about Lady Gaga, but she always keeps it interesting when it comes to make-up. If you can call it make-up. This, her latest public parade has more in common with a paintbrush and a canvas than it does the restrained facial grooming that the rest of the world indulges in on any given day.
And we must applaud her for that, mustn't we? In an age when the beauty aesthetic, due to the increased accessibility of celebrity imagery, is becoming increasingly homogenized (tan, lip gloss, waves, tick), let's be grateful for these little windows of eccentricity.
What I find most interesting about Gaga's revolving door of beauty looks, is that despite it often seeming like the most original thing you might have seen for a long time, it's largely a result of her dipping into the pop culture canon and seeing what she comes out with. And that's not a criticism, there are no new ideas anymore, there is only originality in how old ideas are adapted and applied.
Case in point, Gaga's magnificent paint strokes, could have leapt straight off the catwalk of a Vivienne Westwood show. Does that make it any less joyful? No. Long may you continue, Lady G.
