Socks and sandals actually are coming to a pavement near you
Every so often a fashion trend takes hold of the fashion industry's slightly too primed imagination, and we tout it as the next big thing, even though, when it comes to wearing it in real life, the trend perhaps doesn't quite stand up to the rigours of, say, a pavement or the scrutiny of, say, a sceptical taxi driver.
Mini-bags and heel-less platforms, I'm looking at you.
Socks and sandals was one such trend that I had pegged as an industry obsession, ignited by the styling at Celine (as so many of them are) for spring 2013, with the debut of the 'furkenstock'. Since then, the cool crowd have attempted to imitate that cosiness by wearing socks with their two-strap, sensibly cork-soled, knowingly doofus shoes. You see this outside a show in Paris, you don't bat an eyelid. You see it outside Caledonian Road tube station on a Tuesday morning, you take note.
Then, sure enough, it was everywhere. And by everywhere, I mean on the feet of 'tastemakers' – such as fashion writer Stacey Duguid, who tweeted the below over the weekend.
Importantly, though, the cool crowd are now wearing these as they go to the supermarket rather than on the way to the next fashion show or store launch. Sock and sandals are actually happening in real life – and it's the easiest of early summer updates. Plain black Birkies are available to buy at Asos here.
It isn't even warm enough to wear your sandals *without* socks yet anyway.
