Internet artist William Eadon mixes the arcane and the absurd

Considering one of his best known works is a paper garland spelling out the words ‘F*ck It’, it isn't exactly surprising that photographer, designer and film-maker William Eadon is a seriously laid-back soul. For a start he looks like a cross between a yogi mystic guru and John Lennon. Maybe it’s the beard.

Because despite having worked with industry heavyweights like Opening Ceremony and Terry Richardson, the Brooklyn-based artist refuses to take himself, or life, too seriously. His every answer ends with a joke, a mystical musing or just a contemplative ‘Ummm....hmmmm’.

'I think it’s really important to just be an airhead sometimes and give yourself space to dwell on things that don’t produce wealth,' is how he puts it.

Alternating between deep metaphysics and Buzzfeed-style humour, William’s creative output is as compelling as the items he shares his home/studio with – an inflatable alien and a giant lipstick are propped beside a collection of mystic symbols and books on paganism. 'Don’t worry…. I’m a good witch,' he assures me.

His fashion photography features similarly unexpected props – models are just as likely to pose with pizza slices or pancakes as they are handbags, or be covered in scribbled marker pen instead of clothes. But although there’s a method in the madness, Eadon clearly revels in chaos.

'Sometimes it’s this big plan, where I’m working to recreate and document something out of my imagination' he explains. 'Other times I’ll just show up and throw myself into a situation with no pretense and see what happens in the moment. Letting go of something often brings the finest results.'

Scouting models from friends or on the street – 'I recently completed a job for the launch of an eyewear company that I cast completely from Facebook' – the results call to mind the raw, off-duty sexiness of Corinne Day’s work.

Eadon spent his formative years in small-town 80s Ohio, 'mall-ratting, punk rocking and occult reading...I got picked on a lot', then studied fashion design and landed a job for US mega label Cynthia Rowley (he continues to work for the designer as a creative consultant) and recently supplied work for her affordable art website Exhibition A.

So what’s his ultimate ambition?

'To live a life of leisure, like a pebble beating on the ocean’s shore. LOL. I guess I’m not so ‘starry eyed’ when it comes to fame. I see it more as an avenue to be able to share something with the world…create a dialogue with the planet. I think it’s nice if my work could make people feel happy, smile and laugh.'

And next up? 'That’s a good question!  Whatever feels right, I’ll probably do it. I’m not one to feel guilty for allocating some part of my time just plain dreaming, or being what our society defines as ‘lazy’.'

That’s the kind of philosophy we could definitely get on board with.
