What really goes on behind the scenes? Industry experts share their knowledge

Wendy Rowe is an internationally in-demand make-up artist, working with the top glossy fashion magazines and acting as a creative consultant for Burberry. She specialises in the nude look and is an avid blogger at wendyrowe.com.

What are top tips for looking good in the heat?
Use cream or water-based textures rather than powders because it’s so bright you will see everything on your skin so it really needs to be a skin texture. If you start to put powder on, it will collect on the hairs.

You have a really slick website – why is that important to you and your business?
I get asked questions about make-up all the time, people are fascinated, it’s like you’re a magician, and I want to share that. It’s nice for people to see behind the scenes, it’s a visual diary of things that I like at that moment. I spend much more time working on it than I had planned. I spend ages on the design aspect because I’m a perfectionist. I know in my industry people think ‘Oh my God, it’s amazing you’re so technical’ because a lot of people in my industry don’t do stuff like that because they’re so busy working and travelling, and they even find Twitter difficult.

How do you feel about fake tan?
I think fake tan is great if it's done well. Personally, I think professional application of fake tan gives the best result. But, if you want to do it at home, St Tropez gives a good classic colour and James Read products are quite innovative. so good for something different and multipurpose.

What beauty therapists do you recommend?
Joelle Ciocco for the best facials, Margaret Dabbs in Liberty for the best medical pedicure and James Read or Nichola Joss for a professional tan.

What about eyebrows? I never get my eyebrows threaded – I feel it looks too harsh as they can remove too much hair, it's not my aesthetic.

Is there one treatment that always makes you feel good?
Acupuncture is good for the body and really relaxes me, both mentally and physically. I also feel great after seeing the chiropractor (Dr Joshi is the best), as it realigns me.

How do you make nude make-up look good in photographs?
A nude look will always look great in photographs if you get it right and understand it’s not just about browns and beiges. Also, make sure it's not too shiny as in a photograph this will reflect too much light if someone uses a flash.
