Caryn Franklin on charity and chocolate galore

Our twelve days of Christmas quick-fire q&as bring you seasonal cheer from someone fabulous every morning until the day itself

Caryn Franklin introduced high fashion to a whole generation when she presented The Clothes Show 25 years ago, and she’s still a mainstay in its present day incarnation Clothes Show Live – when she’s not campaigning for more diversity in fashion as co-founder of All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, for which she received an MBE this year, that is.

How was 2013 for you?
It's been a helter-skelter year. I have been promoting a broader range of body and beauty ideals from my the initiative I co-founded with Erin O'Connor and Debra Bourne called All Walks Beyond the Catwalk. We really feel that young women and increasingly young men are under so much body image pressure from the unachievable ideals our industry put out there and we lecture about this in universities across the UK to change the way the next generation of creatives will work.

What’s your tip for Christmas?
Spread the fun out … make sure you begin enjoying it in the run up as well as the other side of new year … get as much mileage as you can. And shop at small local shops if you can. Make your presents smaller if you need to but make them personal and support local crafts, designers, independent shops and gift makers.

What do you eat and wear on Christmas day?
I’ll wear bright colours … my Tripp red tartan jeans and Gushlow & Cole sheepskin lapel wrap over a red jumper. I like boots and thick socks so I can go out and get wood for the fire … I just like being toasty! I’ll eat as much chocolate, mince pies and sherry as I can manage without making myself feel bilious! I love roast turkey and lashings of English mustard and cranberry sauce and I really love Christmas pudding.
