Lady Lawrence does Dior

Our panelists on the latest and greatest celebrity looks

I, like the rest of the world, adore Jennifer Lawrence. I met her once (just after she made Winter’s Bone, before The Hunger Games and super-fame) and she was exactly as you would expect: smart, charming, self-effacing and hilarious. I love her. But do I love this outfit? I like the coat, and I imagine it’s lovely to wear – lots of pleasingly heavy fabric with a great swing shape. But I feel the whole ensemble needs something extra: some colour or texture. A brilliant pair of shoes – something from Sophia Webster, perhaps – would have done the trick.

Jennifer’s Dior cruise dress is pure elegance. It’s a beautiful look that looked minimal and modern on the catwalk helped by the sporty, paired back styling (hair came in a low scraped back ponytail with a centre parting). Jennifer looks so chic, but with her new haircut, the overall look feels rather too sensible, and a little bit first lady.

Classic, smart, tasteful. You can't really complain, can you? And yet the way Jennifer Lawrence is wearing this Dior coat-dress bears little to no resemblance to the catwalk clothes coming from that house right now, or the tone those pieces have struck for the past few seasons. Since designer Raf Simons arrived, Dior's traditionally very bourgeois look has been redeveloped into something fresher, younger and cooler. That message hasn't reached J.Law or her stylist; the shoes and the haircut conspire to make this look rather 90s newsreader, I'm afraid.
