What the Frock: Zooey Deschanel
Our panelists on the latest and greatest celebrity looks
Zooey Deschanel wears a characteristically quirky ensemble in New York
Amol Rajan, comment editor at The Independent
Did you know that Zooey Deschanel is an anagram of 'A Cheesy Old Zone'? Yes, me too. And those snaps of her heading into the Late Show with David Letterman were nothing if not cheesy. Loads of blue; a lovely white, buttoned-up cardy; flat shoes: it all looked rather accessible, or like something you might buy your fiancé to get you out of the doghouse. In fact, that reminds me of something. Thanks, Zooey.

Zooey, I can’t deny that your thick mane of gloss and red lip get a double thumbs up, but the outfit? Yes it’s very pretty and put together and glamorous, but really it’s quite ageing on you – I hate to say it, but you look 33 going on 53 thanks to that mum-length tutu, buttoned up cardie and ballet flat combo. The teal blue colour of the tutu is fantastic, just not the multiple netted and poofed up style or dowdy length of it. The outfit screams trophy-wife Zooey, and not in a good way.

I love the way that Zooey has fastened one single button, which performs the job of pulling the whole outfit together, quite literally. She looks so delightfully breezy otherwise, so preppy and springlike but still somehow dreamy - it's as if the button is providing a centre of gravity to make sure she doesn't float away. Also, they tell you not to match the same colour to itself but she's lined up that muted sea blue on the cardigan, the skirt and the shoes, and it's great.
