Rooney Mara's hat hair. That looks like a fascinator, but isn't

by

How very, very thoughtful. It’s as though Rooney Mara knows that Royal Ascot commences tomorrow with the vision of hair she displayed last night. It’s as though she swatted up on Piers Atkinson’s latest designs and thought, ‘you know what? I don’t need a hat because I can do it with my hair’. So here we are, or here she is rather, with a pretty special fascinator hair-do that would make even Philip Treacy’s more intricate creations feel ill at ease.

The colour alone is something of sheer beauty. It looks like that soft, virgin hair that’s never been touched with a bottle of dye in its life and still holds the same silkiness that it did in the womb. A mixture between Snow White’s night sky colour and Angelina Jolie’s jet black shade in Salt, it’s the kind of hair that blondes would kill to wake up with in another life. But actually she has hit the bleach bottle before and this shade is thanks to an LA hairdresser’s helping hand, before you turn too green-eyed.

But the style… the marvellous, hat-like style of it. It’s reminds me slightly of a Japanese Geisha doll with that intricate and fancy nature and at first glance, it really does look like an actual hat. A small, little thing that’s perched elegantly at the front of her head, as though she’s off to Margaret Thatcher’s state funeral or the front row of Alexander McQueen’s last show. But it’s not; it’s all, pure hair, people. And the fact that Rooney’s left her hair to do all the talking with nothing more than a single coating of black mascara, makes it all the more terrific and wonderful to look at. Phenomenal work as ever, Miss Mara.
