A scent inspired by a transsexual car crash? Yes, it exists!

by

From mysterious looks to camera to countless images of models sniffing the air orgasmically while running though a field of bluebells – the narratives that are fitted around the launch of a new scent (including one that involves you adding your own pee to the formula) can be a bit, er, grandiose.

Providing a potential antidote to all that extravagant posturing is a new collaboration between perfumer Brent Leonesio and fine artist and filmmaker Austin Young, brought together by The Institute for Art and Olfaction in LA. The fruits of their labour? A new fragrance called Accident, inspired by (go on have a guess. Actually no don’t, you’ll never get it): “an imaginary scenario whereby a trans-woman crashes into a gas station… It’s heady stuff, and rather amazing. ” says Leonesio. Including “notes such as gasoline vapour, safety glass, smoking tyres, face powder and a mechanic”, we quite agree, it does indeed sound a rather amazing way to poke fun at the fragrance industry while creating a scent that you can actually wear.

And the video the team has released to accompany the perfume is pretty bonkers too. Featuring US comedian Deven Green, the film by Austin Young is a brilliantly irreverent spoof that sees Deven – presented as "an actual perfume model" by the voiceover – performing acts such as ‘falling down, just like a woodland creature’ or getting spanked on the bottom and being told "bark", and shines a spotlight on just how daft perfume ads can be.
