Ready those cheekbones - the Croydon facelift is back

by

We've seen the shows. And dissected them to within an inch of their lives. But, truly, it's impossible to know which out of the 13,538 individual trends that were thrown up at AW13 fashion week will actually stick by the time autumn rolls around.

That is, until the campaigns begin to trickle out. Pouring over the particular placement of eyeliner, or the exact level of radiance beaming off the skin within said campaigns, is as much a precursor to the season ahead as, well, a crystal ball. And so here we have the first deduction of a beauty diktat for AW13: the Croydon Facelift. Indeed, the much-maligned hairstyle - the one that has always sat on the fringes (if you'll excuse the pun) of high fashion hair society - is unashamedly back.

In his first ever advertising campaign, the unstoppable JW Anderson has chosen to unite the twin delights of new face, Lucan Gillespie (yes, she looks interminably young but is that not the most angelic, pre-raphaelite face you've ever seen?) with a ponytail so high, it appears as though it could have been plonked on top of her head by a (very tall) passing stranger.

But that's not all - you'll also notice here, the very deliberate presence of a black sateen scrunchie, which it seems, must go hand in hand in with a Croydon facelift ponytail (there's nothing more Princess Michael of Kent than a low-slung, scrunchied pony). Irreverent, yes. Translatable? Possibly. But the fact that it's been fashioned by hair visionary, Mark Hampton, bodes will for this style come autumn.

Preferring to take a slightly more Madame Whiplash route to the Croydon, comes Fendi, with an autumn/winter13 campaign featuring everyone's favourite pair of eyebrows, Cara Delevingne. Sleeker, de-scrunchied and actually, really rather chic. Or, at least it is in the campaign shot above. Others involve dizzy-inducing levels of hair-flipping.

Though there is something undeniably ASBO about the Croydon Facelift pony, it's impossible to deny it's cheekbone lifting powers - for all, scrunchie or no scrunchie.

Just don't say Vicky Pollard.
