Make-up artist Emma Day on her 90s, self-cut fringe
The celebrity make-up artist reveals the 90s hairstyle she teamed with Vivienne Westwood ouotfits and took to the Portobello Road
‘This picture has fun memories for me as it was when I was doing music back in the 90s for a label at the time called Mo Wax. This was a publicity shot that was never used. I did music for about four years before I did make-up and sung with the likes of Blackgrape for their song In the Name of the Father.
I absolutely loved singing but I wasn't confident to go the whole hog with it although I have fond memories of those times when we were all so creative and trying out things and seeing what would stick. It was when I had just started to highlight my hair (I used to use cheap highlighting kits from Boots) so it was the start of ruining it as I had chocolate brown curly hair before this.
"I always trimmed my hair, only about once a year – remember this was the 90s, we were very low maintenance in those days!"
I am a full on blonde now but this was literally my first foray into lightening it. It was the longest I ever had it and I had just cut the fringe in myself (rather badly as there is only a small bit of fringe there). In fact I always trimmed my hair, only about once a year – remember this was the 90s, we were very low maintenance in those days!
My wardrobe was either Vivienne Westwood, Hysteric Glamour T-shirts, Stussy or little vintage things I found in Portobello on a Friday where I would bump into Kate Moss and a whole other host of 90s chicks. I spent the whole time in sneakers or Vivienne Westwood or Bella Freud heels.’
