Fifty shades of Sam Taylor Wood
The film adaptation of the world's most boring sex book has been given slightly more gravitas this morning with the emergence of reports that video artist Sam Taylor-Wood will direct it.
The YBA is known for her video installation works, and her first feature film Nowhere Boy (2009) was a John Lennon biopic, which garnered good reviews, but this project – should the rumours turn out to be true – will be rather different.
The film has been highly anticipated since it was announced by the legions of fans who managed somehow not to fall asleep or get bored while reading the world's first fan fiction-turned-bestseller by EL James, which purports to be erotic but contains very little in the way of slap and tickle, documenting instead the sado-masochistic relationship between a young girl and an older man who forces her to eat three square meals a day and get plenty of sleep.
The lead actors remain a mystery too, although speculation has been rife. Ryan Gosling and Robert Pattinson have been suggested, but we think it might go against the Goz's feminist principles. Perhaps Taylor-Wood's actor husband Aaron taylor-Johnson might step up to the plate? She has directed him before, in an REM video; perhaps the time has come for a more, er, complex collaboration.
