The most anticipated baby of 2013 thus far (she’s obviously going to be eclipsed by the royal progeny later this summer), little North West, has had her name endorsed by US Vogue.

An article on the US Vogue website defends Kim and Kanye’s slightly unusual but apparently Anna Wintour-approved name choice, as the author, NYU sociology academic and father of 15-year-old E and 13-year-old Yo (yes, really) Dalton Conley, says, ‘forgive me if I don’t think Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have saddled their daughter with a cross to bear for the rest of her life.’ 

He argues that ‘celebrities do things differently’, quoting Wittgenstein and citing other wackier celebrity names like Apple (Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s first-born) and Moon Unit (Frank Zappa’s daughter) before interrogating the name from a gender and race perspective.

‘I think the more interesting sociological phenomenon that North West embodies (as the daughter of a black man) is the rise of unique black names,’ Conley says. ‘Around the same time celebrities started thinking up names that otherwise served as nouns, verbs or adjectives, African Americans began to abandon longstanding naming patterns.’
