Five reasons to love Scottish fashion right now

by

We've noted before that Scotland is one of Britain's best hot-beds for creative fashion talent, what with Paris having designs on Glaswegian Christopher Kane, and as the Scottish Style Awards lit up Glasgow's picturesque Kelvingrove Art Gallery and museum, that fact was even more apparent.

Over half of Scotland's creative talent works out of Glasgow making it the biggest centre for design outside of London, and last night's event went to prove that.

Here's five reasons to love Scottish fashion right now.

Winner of womenswear designer of the year at the Scottish Style awards, Judy Clark mixes Scottish tradition, via Harris tweed and Scottish lace, with modern design. Having begun her career at Alexander McQueen, before setting up her own eponymous label, she's most certainly one to watch.

Self-proclaimed fashion soul-mates, bloggers and two-woman PR machine as Betty and Bee, Sheri Scott and Claire Stewart energetically sum up everything that's cool about Glasgow's fashion scene right now. They caused a particular stir at last night's awards, both wearing Glasgow-based label, Obscure Couture.

Having already garnered a reputation as one of Scotland's top milliners, William Chambers has been worn by style heroes including Lady Gaga and Roisin Murphy. Models wearing giant golden bow headpieces on the catwalk at the Scottish Style Awards were a reminder of what's to love about the designer, who is about to open his first stand-alone shop in Glasgow's swanky Italian quarter.

You couldn't praise Scottish fashion without mentioning Christopher Kane, whose ever popular velvet dress, from his autumn 2013 collection, was worn by Sara MacDonald, as she collected the award for most stylish female, last night.

Just missing out on the award for WW designer of the year was Glasgow-based The Rodnik band. Already loved by Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora, with pieces like this amazing sequin 'ham bag', we suspect they'll be gaining plenty more fans in no time.
