Before Scarlett Johansson was a highly acclaimed actress, international sex symbol and controversial SodaStream front woman she was a New York teenager, who did regular things like go to school, and today The New York Post have published pictures from her 2002 prom.

The photographs are remarkable for two reasons: firstly, she is attending with her then-boyfriend Jack Antonoff, the lead singer of Fun who is now dating Lena Dunham, which is just an intriguing dating fact. It’s always interesting to see who went out with whom before they got it with their present significant others. 

And secondly the photos are remarkable because she looks sort of normal. She is beautiful obviously, but her outfit is all manner of teenage-style strange, comprising a white shirt that seems to have been fashioned into a ballgown, a plastic-looking necklace, earrings that stick out at right angles, and a wrist corsage. The thing is that Scarlett Johansson was quite famous in 2002 – she had appeared in The Horse Whisperer and Ghost World; she went to Oscars parties in designer gowns – but for her prom, she seems to have eschewed professional styling and opted for a more classic teen look of visible bras and kohl-lined eyes. 

She wasn’t trying to impress fashion mag types; she was much more likely to be trying to impress her fellow students at the Professional Children’s School on the Upper West Side. Which is pretty standard prom-dressing. It’s just heartening to know that, just like the rest of us, Johansson didn’t comprehensively nail her teenage style.
