JW Anderson on how CK One was ‘such a moment’

by

Suzy Menkes sat down with JW Anderson after he showed his spring/summer collection at London Collections: Men earlier this week to discuss the notions of androgyny in his designs (this is a man who attires men in halternecks), his collaboration with Versace and his hectic schedule.

In the video that accompanied The New York Times piece, he came across as remarkably calm for a man with so much going on, talking in a slow and considered tone about the details of his collections and his design process. He and Menkes are like an anti-Vine, taking the time to really consider the finer points of fashion, so even though the video is less than four minutes long, they cover some important ground, including:

Anderson on fashion androgyny: ‘I really like this idea of a shared wardrobe where garments don’t really have sex.  I don’t know if it’s gender bending but I think it’s something which is a bit more what a garment means to a person … I like the idea that it is a garment, which kind of sits in no zone. … When I was younger I was always obsessed by the idea of a perfume that was like … You know CK One. That was such a moment. And it’s not that it’s based on that but there’s something about that.’

On working with Donatella Versace: ‘It was a really uplifting experience, it was really exciting to work with her because she has seen everything and she has so much knowledge.’

On his workload and the pace of the industry: ‘Sometimes it does feel like you are on a never-ending cyclone but it’s part of what the industry is today. It’s a very addictive process, you’re trying to keep the adrenaline going forward, keep it working. ‘
