Remembering Victoria Beckham's first 5 years in fashion
In September 2013, Victoria Beckham's eponymous fashion brand passed its five year mark and this year, the popstar-turned-designer releases a video story, in collaboration with Skype, detailing her journey from red carpet to backstage.
Her label and reputation in the fashion world rose so quickly that it's hard to believe it has only been half a decade. Within months of the debut of her spring/summer 2009 collection, A-list Hollywood stars were wearing Victoria Beckham dresses for red carpet events. The fact that she was already well-connected in the US didn't hurt – her friend Eva Longoria has been one of her most loyal and famous customers – but no actress or model chooses to have their photo taken in a dress they're less than thrilled with. The fact of the matter is, women were drawn to Beckham's figure-sculpting, ladylike dresses because they were flattering and glamorous. From Jennifer Lopez to Oprah Winfrey, they made stars look and feel their best.
To make someone feel beautiful is no small achievement, so if Beckham had continued to produce impeccably cut bodycon dresses, her customers could have had no complaint. But as the seasons have passed, Beckham has surprised the industry by revealing further strings to her bow. She's explored more fashion-forward silhouettes and moved away from sexy corsetry towards clever layers and boyish tailoring. Her ability to push and challenge her own aesthetic has been reflected in her personal style, which has gone from primped WAG to something far less obvious and more thoughtful. 'I like to ask myself how I would wear something, then I turn it on its head,' she said recently.
It's been an astonishing evolution from the woman we once knew as a Spice Girl, and it's only just begun. From the first dress to the first major industry award, click through the gallery to see the milestones of Victoria Beckham's first five years in fashion.
