Sheer tights add up to the perfect 10 (denier)

by

Ten denier tights have always trodden a fine line between leather-clad femme fatale on the cusp of the 90s and those weird plastic legs proudly displaying a department store hosiery range, but lately, women on the red carpet have gone all Mugler-babe and picked super sheer pairs.

It seems fair to point the finger at Hedi Slimane for bringing ten deniers up to date, after he mixed embellished pairs among the fishnets he styled with his autumn 2013 collection for Saint Laurent, adding an element of glamour to the grunge on show.

Given their power-babe origins, and rock-chick reinstatement, sheer tights lend themselves especially well to leather.

Miranda Kerr added extra impact to a pair of leather shorts in Paris in October.

Lily Donaldson employed a pair to similar effect at a Purple Magazine dinner back in February, looking like she'd stepped straight out of an Aerosmith video.

We can't condone the cat ears, but praise be to Katy Perry for styling hers straight out of the Saint Laurent rule-book with DMs and a 90s-style dress as she arrives in Sydney this week.

Tali Lennox tones down the sexy vibes of this mega-mini dress without losing any of the glamour by wearing it with sheer tights and ankle boots at the Roger Vivier dinner in New York this week.

Pretty sure this picture of Taylor Swift in LA last month proves that sheer tights and white shirts were meant to be together.

It's not all about the rock-babe look with sheer tights though. When Alexa Chung wore a pair with a floral Valentino dress at her book launch in New York this week, they offered a softer look than opaques might have.

And they're similarly complementary the light denim pinafore Atlanta De Cadenet wore to Miuccia Prada's Gatsby party in New York back in April.

Join them and ditch your opaques! Just watch out with rings, nails, zips on your boots or you'll end up looking way more grunge than you intended.
