Style lessons we’ve learned from Clueless
Clueless might have reached the wise old age of 18 recently, but there’s no denying its style influence is as strong now as it was circa 95, when pulling your socks over your knees was just standard.
As well as often featuring images from the film itself, cult blog and zine, The Mustpit, a pictorial demonstration of how to dress for a night in Dalston, features plenty of the mid 90s penchant for fluffy pastels and crop tops, via images of Britney, old editorials and even the odd Paris Hilton, that can certainly be traced back to the film. Cher’s (not that one) style can even be seen on the catwalk too; the pastel jacket-and-skirt combos in Carven’s autumn 2013 collection, not to mention bubble-gum fur coats, would not have looked out of place in the Valley pre-Y2K, while Moschino’s preppy tartan skirts and jackets had Bronson Alcott High written all over them.
When you think about it, it makes sense that tastemakers show signs of having learned all they know at the Clueless school of dressing, when if you’re between 25 and 35, chances are, the film furnished you with some of your most memorable style lessons.
We won’t patronise you with a rundown of the film’s full wardrobe, because we don’t doubt it’s already etched on your brain (and if not, this video will do a great job of jogging you memory), but click the gallery and remind yourself of some of the most important things Clueless taught us about dressing, that are still worth living by now.
