The good, the bad and the ugly of Friends fashion
Friends had a complicated relationship with fashion. On the one hand a look back at Rachel's penchant for a high-waisted mini skirt and fitted sweater combo in the early episodes leaves you wondering why it was only her hair we were copying all that time, while on the other, so many chinos.
As you look forward to some festive sofa time, AKA watching so many back-to-back episodes of Friends you start to think they're your actual friends, and the show approaches its 20th anniversary next year, which will lead to plenty of nostalgia, if not the rumoured reunion, let us walk you through the good, the bad and the ugly of fashion from the show.
Good: 90s jeans.
Rachel in particular wore high-waisted, light denim mum jeans well. Most recently seen in a pub in Dalston.
Bad: voluminous shirts.
There was no such thing as a neat fitted shirt in the world of Friends, where said garments were positively blousey. Although, all that swinging silk did enhance Chandler's moves somewhat.
Ugly: bootcut jeans.
The embroidery just adds insult to injury. Let's not even talk about the jacket.
Good: dungaree shorts.
Mini dungarees were a style staple of summer 2013 and Rachel looked great in them when she busted Monica for having lunch with Ross' new girlfriend Julie. Would wear now.
Bad: Chinos and 'sweater vests'.
If we need to explain why, there is nothing for you here.
Ugly: The holiday armadillo.
So much creepier than Santa.
Good: button-down dresses.
Total 90s staple that still looks good now.
Phoebe was a particularly big fan.
Add Isabel Marant boots and you've basically got Kate Bosworth.
Bad: 'serious' suits.
When Rachel got a proper job her wardrobe took a serious downturn and she started dressing like she worked in a regional bank branch. And she was supposed to work in fashion!
Ugly: Ross' leather trousers.
And the subsequent situation they left him in...
Good: shrunken tops, high-waisted bottoms.
This was Rachel's full-time silhouette at the beginning of Friends, and it just worked.
Monica gave us some good examples too. A fine pretty pub outfit if we ever did see one.
Bad: Dad clothes.
Shapeless checked shirts and zip-up jumpers aren't even OK for Dad dancing.
Plus, only your Dad (or Jeremy Clarkson lookalikes) would wear a leather jacket as unnecessarily oversized as Joey's.
Bad: turkey face.
Poultry should never be headwear. Even Gaga draws the line at a steak fascinator.
Good: Cheongsam dresses.
Rachel had loads of them when this trend was a thing, and you know you wished you did too. Maybe you still do...
Thanks Friends for giving us some top 90s fashion moments... and for reminding us that some things are best left in the past.
