Why The Bridge's Saga Norén wins at Scandi crime drama style

by

The Bridge returns to BBC4 with a new series this Saturday 4th January, and we're not just pumped about getting a fix of super-bleak Scandi crime drama, but also for some snooping on our life-hero that is the show's heroine, Saga Norén.

She's hands down one of the best feminists on TV, neither gratuitously sexed-up to show that pretty women have brains too nor downgraded to dowdiness to prove how serious she is. She sleeps with who she wants to without being labelled slutty, and she gives the best side-eye around to anyone who crosses her.

Best of all, none of this gets dressed up as #INDEPENDENTWOMAN. 'No one noticed. It's not so strange here', actress Sofia Helin, who plays Saga, told The Independent of her character's liberated lifestyle. Saga just is, and the show's story co-exists happily (as can be) with her.

Here's why we think she's the best crime-fighter on telly...

Her never-brushed hair is the kind you've used countless gallons of salt-spray trying to achieve.

Her stylish mastery of leather detective-wear gives Dog the Bounty Hunter a run for his money.

Her penchant for a vintage Porsche shows that her taste extends way beyond her outfits.

Her laissez faire attitude to cooking makes us feel way better about all the ready-made soup in the fridge.

She's a total straight-talker.

She wears the clothes to bed (which she never makes) that she's had on all day, because she's evidently got better things to do.

Such as...

And it's always on her terms.

She rarely changes her outfit...

...because she already owns the style she has.

When the show was taken stateside and remade (why, why do they do this?!), style icon Diane Kruger was drafted in to translate Sofia Helin's 'don't mess with this' face from the Scandi original for a US audience.

Saga, you're a bonafide badass. Bring on the subtitles!

Series 2 of The Bridge starts on BBC4 on Saturday 4th January at 9pm.
