It's only in the past few seasons that jewellery has become part of your overall look, be it a simple selection of studs, a jewelled ear cuff or a subtly fabulous bit of Gaia Repossi.

By that, we don't advocate wearing a fruit-laden Carmen Miranda head-dress or the sort of dangly earrings your music teacher wore. We mean powerful and punchy pieces that might have once been reserved for after-dark, but which now – as we think these street style pictures prove – can more readily be paired with jeans and daywear to make something of a statement.

It isn't quite bling (although you can take it in that direction should you so wish) and it's a far cry from the piercing-heavy street looks of the 90s. But it's punkish rather than pretty and designed to be noticed. So get yourself some metal and wear it every time you leave the house.
