Footloose and fashion-forward… OK, 1984's dance epic starring Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer isn't quite the latter. But there’s a lot to learn from this silver screen standard of the soft-shoe shuffle. As the protagonists grow up, navigate their rebellious teen years, sneak out late, yes, dance and even kiss boys, they do it in style. 80s style.

Heroine Ariel shows us how the cowgirl look can be worked in the everyday, from those red cowboy boots to that tanned fringed jacket. But city-slicker Ren's mate Willard stands as a cautionary tale against going too far down the Wild West route.

Did we mention this is the 80s? So obviously there are some crazy perms and shoulder-pads around, which are perhaps a step too far for all but the most devoted Dalstonite. But Footloose’s big baggy jumpers and velour (yeah, you read right) give us some real style inspiration for now. And although there were a lot of questionable bottom-enlarging jeans around back then – before the phrase 'Mom jeans' had been invented – Ariel's pair is so nicely flattering, it might just change your mind about them.
