Solange Knowles is the girl who always gets it right
The stars were out for the premiere of Woody Allen's new film, Blue Jasmine, last night and while Cate Blanchett looked beautiful in Balenciaga and cool New Yorkers like Girls's Zosia Mamet turned heads, there was one woman who stole the show: Solange Knowles in Prada, pictured.
Twenty-seven-year-old Knowles has, for the past year, at least, managed to be the person that consistently stands out when you click through the photos from a premiere, event or party. Often actresses or singers look like they've been hoisted into a borrowed dress for an event; you can feel the tension in their bodies as they pose on the red carpet; you just know a loop of ' MUST NOT SWEAT, MUST NO SPILL ANYTHING, MUST NOT EXHALE LEST I BE CAUGHT AT UNFLATTERING ANGLE' is running through their heads. Solange, however, always looks as though she belongs in the clothes, she's living life in her bright separates – in fact, she's breathing life into them. An outfit that could look ordinary on anybody else, looks special on Solange.
For starters, she's beautiful, and of course, there is that hair; whether in an Afro style or in braids, it's a refreshing contrast to the updos and tonged waves that dominate the red carpet. Then there is the make-up: bright eye-shadows and lipsticks that clash joyously with her outfits. The final touch with Solange is the accessories. They are never an afterthought. This is a woman who loves shoes, bags and jewellery as much as we do and isn't afraid to pile it on, fully embracing maximalism.
The journalist Caitlin Moran tweeted this month, 'The most persistent truth in the universe is that Solange Knowles has never worn a bad outfit. Ever', and while it's not strictly 100 per cent true (there were a few clangers before she teamed up with her current stylist Ogo Offodile), we share the sentiment. In Kenzo at the Met Ball or in J.Crew at Coachella, Solange Knowles always manages to judge an outfit perfectly, dressing to suit the occasion and herself simultaneously.
