So what does 19 look like then? French mother dresses as daughter to sit exam

by

Hilarity and delicious mirth at the story today that a French mother has been arrested for impersonating her 19-year-old daughter in order to sit an exam in her stead.

She began the English exam paper and was only removed from the hall (quietly, of course, so as not to disturb the others) when an invigilator twigged that she didn't look much like the girl who was supposed to be in that seat. Now there's a mum for you: mine only ever went as far as *wishing* she could do it all for me. She was handed over to police waiting outside the gymnasium, who presumably checked the contents of her see-through pencil case too.

How, you ask? The 52-year-old woman managed to avoid arousing suspicion by dressing the part: The Guardian describes her as having worn Converse and 'a lot of make-up'. Is that what 19 looks like nowadays?

Arguably yes: youth icon Kristen Stewart ticks off the Converse part of the look; Amanda Bynes covers off the shedload of slap requirement. They may not be 19 but they're who the young women of tomorrow are looking to. That's the information I've gleaned from my Nana-radar anyway.

To be fair, I'd describe my 19-year-old style as Converse and a lot of make-up too. It's a fairly timeless look when your main priorities are a.) slobbing to as few lectures as possible b.) appearing less hungover that you really are and c.) not looking as rough as you feel. Actually, I'm worried there was a pair of riding boots and some jeans in the mix when I was 19, but forgive me – that was on account of the posh peer pressure at university.

Come to think of it, maybe this is what 19 looks like. Shudder.

19 has always been my 'oh that's what I am in my head' age. I think I'm going to have to reconsider that on this evidence though. 21 it is.
