What the Frock: Madonna

Madonna wears Dolce & Gabbana at a screening of her tour film in New York

Sali Hughes, beauty editor at The Guardian
Madonna has paid homage to Marlene Dietrich's style many times, and I always love it. There's something very cool and 'screw you' about a female sex symbol walking the red carpet in a man's suit (I vehemently exclude Celine Dion's back-to-front white tux when I say this). Yes, it looks a little fancy dress here (I'd have preferred to see it mixed up with super high stilettos instead of spats), but it's an event for Madonna's longtime stage costumiers, Dolce & Gabbana, so the theatrics make total sense. Also, her hair looks better than it has in years. I adore these shorter, honeyed waves against the bold rep lip. Stunning.

I am part of that freak group that won’t have a bad word said about Madonna. But I am stuggling to hold my resolve when faced with this, her mashed-up homage to Fred Astaire and Marlene Dietrich. The overcooked outfit completely swamps her lithe body, giving her the stature of Les Dawson rather than the yoga-head figure we know she’s got underneath it. Still, the old Hollywood make-up is unquestionably perfect. Reminds me of the glory days.

Here's my train of thought when I see this:

1. What the frock!
2. Aw, it's dear old Madonna. She can pass off wearing *anything* can't she.
3. Hmm.
4. (Suddenly has SERIOUS doubts...)
5. Do the trousers fit?
6. What's with her stance? HANDS!
7. Oh hello pretty little yellow flower.
8. She's won me back – good work M'a.
8. Though that top hat isn't nearly big enough.
9. Has someone died?
10. Evita would never have signed off on this.
