Pepto bismol Balenciaga for Blanchett
Our panelists on the latest and greatest celebrity looks
Cate Blanchett in Balenciaga at Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine premiere
Lou Stoppard, fashion editor at SHOWstudio
Cate Blanchett is a unique type of clothes horse - she looks amazing in everything, and clearly loves fashion, but is also strikingly intelligent and talented. What a fresh change from so many other red carpet darlings. Not that I'm thinking of anyone in particular. It takes a smart lady to maintain an air of poise and intellect in a gown that looks like a wedding cake decoration - even if it is Balenciaga. Kudos to you Cate.
Harriet Walker, news editor at Never Underdressed
This is classic Balenciaga, in the directional vein of that house's founder that felt modern even when he was still in charge during the Fifties, and full of shapes and techniques that haven't dated since then. Architectural swoops matched with feminine details, elegant but never frou-frou. Sure, the Daily Mail thinks it's a bit odd, but I love it. I'm a firm believer in the haute-ness of a shell top (especially when it comes with a train), and I also love the tonal contrast of this peach shade with Cate's own flawless hide. She's like something from another world.
Zoe Rocha, TV producer
Pepto-Bismol pink is definitely the colour de jour and Ms.Blanchett has confidently embraced it to the fullest from her peachy cheeks to her pretty heels. The structured top section of the Balenciaga cape is elegant and the framing of the train falling behind is the perfect fusion of modern and graceful. While the look could have been in slight danger of looking too 'matchy-matchy' she cleverly avoided this by teaming it with the feathered pencil skirt which suddenly uplifted it to a glorious ensemble of ladylike texture. If only the royal baby had been a girl, Cate would have been even more on trend!
