Tough girl beauty stomps into Paris
We may only be a few days into Paris – the longest stint in the Fashion Week diary – but already a clearly defined beauty aesthetic is emerging. Tough hair. Tough make-up. Tough chic. It’s all very Carine Roitfeld.
Just one note of caution: There is a fine (eye) line between ‘aggressive’ and ‘tough’ as chic. To saunter this line successfully, you must make a nod to severity in one small way only. Anything more and you’ll just look scary.
There’s no one better to embody this vision of empowered femininity than Roland Mouret. The man who knows what women want – then makes them look that way. Val Garland created a ‘toughened up feline eye’ that followed swiftly on from Milan’s skinny liner trend by ringing the lash lines – then keeping cheeks and lips low key.
From felines to feathered friends, Lanvin’s swoop of thick black that graced the upper lash line gave models an almost bird-like strength. Kicking the natural red out of lips with a hint of beige and keeping skin pale made this modern and interesting.
At Hussein Chalayan, hair stylist Anthony Turner was interested in exploring masculinity and movement. So one side was drenched with L’Oreal Professionnel Full Volume Mousse then finger-raked back – as if a man had flicked the hair from his eyes with a quick, frustrated movement. Like wearing your boyfriend’s scent or slinging on his sweater, there was something infinitely strong and sexy about this look.
