Millie Kendall’s bleached crew cut past

The co-founder of Beautymart talks us through her LA haircut, how she reworked it for her wedding and why she’d love Sam McKnight to chop it all off again

‘I was living in LA working as a hairdresser’s assistant when this photo was taken. It was somewhere between 1986 and 1988. I was just about to get married and had completely over-bleached my hair, which had turned to an insipid beige tone, so it needed to come off. I actually had this short haircut for my wedding, though I wore a Barbara Streisand style turban that I had made because I honestly thought I would regret looking at it in years to come.

My boss, Gill Brookes-Jones from Taboo in LA, cut it for me. I was always very experimental, and still am, and Gill used me in some of her shoots for her salon. I was a reluctant model but loved having my hair cut. I only really grew my hair in my late 20s, circa 1995.

"I think I'm building up to another crop. Sam McKnight would be my choice to cut my hair off, but getting him to do it is probably a fantasy I will have for many years to come."

I love a very gamine look and I like short hair to be really short. An old friend of mine, the photographer Liz Collins, had great hair back in the 90s – short, cute and blonde. My hair is not the same texture and is much courser so I always go with a short bob.

I like my hair now but I do actually dream of cutting it all off again. I think I'm building up to another crop. Sam McKnight would be my choice to cut my hair off, but getting him to do it is probably a fantasy I will have for many years to come. I love Balmain Texturising Salt Spray, £16.95, at the moment; it really has moved beach products on a notch.’
