Pink, not red, lips ruled at last night's Golden Globes
The Golden Globes are traditionally a good beauty marker for the rest of awards season, but if last night's make-up is our litmus paper, it decreed that the classic red Hollywood lip is in trouble. Instead, it's been usurped for something much softer and, well how can we break this to you, pink.
While the red carpet was not 100% devoid of scarlet (Zoes Saldana and Deschanel obliged), there was a pervading theme of raspberry and hot pink tones that felt decidedly pretty, as opposed to punchy - see nominee Sandra Bullock's dark pink shade and Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett's unashamedly candy pink lip.
A psychologist could go to town decoding the lipstick shades chosen by nominees. Riotous, retro red does require a certain amount of ballsy confidence to pull off, so perhaps it's no surprise that for the first outing of Hollywood's hopeful in 2014, on the whole lips played on the pretty and quietly optimistic side of the colour spectrum.
