Rough and tumble: an ode to the tomboy

by

There’s a bit of tomboy in every girl - even Marilyn Monroe always had dirt under her nails. So there was a silent wail of approval across the globe when it was declared back on the beauty agenda for SS13 and onwards into AW13. But for the real tomboys among us, it never went away.

What better way to show the thoroughfare of laddish-girls of a generation than by celebrating the look in cinema. Boyish charm has been the staple to many a screen icon’s success – where would the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Jean Seberg and Diane Keaton be without their handsome brows and buttoned-up collars?

What really makes tomboy chic so utterly appealing is the collision of the tough with the elegant; unbrushed hair teamed with a ribbon of black liner across the eyelid, or perhaps a thick brow set against healthy, radiant skin and ruddy cheeks fresh from climbing trees.
