12 quick, cheap ideas when you have nothing to wear in the morning

by

We've all been there: standing in front of an overflowing wardrobe, wailing 'I've got nothing to wear!'

You're aware you're being ridiculous (spoilt even), but as you try on every possible, failsafe outfit you own and dismiss them just as quickly – 'boring', 'ugly', 'old' – before you know it, it feels you're on a one-way ticket to wardrobe panic. Oh, and you're late.

At this point in the spiral of sartorial doom, what's called for is a heavy dose of perspective. Some quick and easy ideas to help put together that killer outfit lurking in your wardrobe, but which, somehow, you've always overlooked.

So scroll down and next time you've 'got nothing to wear', try one of these quick, cheap styling ideas. Your mornings just got a whole lot easier.

1. Put on a pair of shoes you haven’t worn in ages and base your outfit around them
We're not taking about practical go-with-everything shoes, we're talking about a pair of shoes you fell in love with, bought and maybe haven't worn in a while because, well, purple suede platforms don't go with everything. Make your hero shoes the star of your outfit, and let them shine.

2. Raid your boyfriend or flatmate's wardrobe
The easy way to get the thrill of a new purchase without spending any money – hurrah! Beyond the financial benefits of this point, if you're raiding a guy's wardrobe you've got a whole new silhouette to play with. Choose oversized knits or shirts, they'll look great with jeans and flats.

3. Experiment with colour
There's a lot of colour about for spring (in one camp, are soft delicate pastels and in the other, bright primary colours) but changing the way you pair colours together can open up whole new outfits. Instead of pairing that great *red skirt with a black top, try pairing it with a *blue silk shirt instead. Mix up your palettes, and play.

4. Instagram is great for inspiration
Just be careful not to fall into the social media vortex.

5. A statement necklace is your best friend
Worried that your jeans and cashmere jumper are looking a bit safe? Throw on a statement necklace. Works equally well with a simple T-shirt.

6. Put on your favourite matching underwear and go from there
Don't underestimate the power of a good outfit foundation. If you've got great underwear on, you're halfway to winning the battle as you'll feel fantastic whatever you put on.

7. Stick to the classics, you can never go wrong with a simple white shirt
There is no occasion that a simple white shirt doesn't work for –  work, at the beach slung over a bikini, at a bar. They're called wardrobe classics for a reason.

8. Apply make up first and put on a bold coloured lip
All outfits look more pulled together when you're rocking a strong lipstick. Treat it like an accessory, and make it the star of your outfit. Suddenly that simple, biscuit coloured twinset* you're wearing gets elevated to a whole new level.

*approach biscuit coloured twinsets with caution

9. Check the weather forecast and work out what's weather appropriate
So you're late for work because you've been putting together your outfit (which looks great btw), you get outside and it's arctic #massivefail. By letting the weather dictate what you're going to wear that day you can easily cut your wardrobe options in half. And when it does snow you'll be looking smug and chic in your Chanel skiwear.

10. Do some exercise!
It's been proven that you have clearer thoughts during and after exercise, so what are you waiting for. Today's outfit inspiration might come to you on a lap around the park.

11. And if the above doesn't work, keep your trainers on and go sports deluxe
Yes, you can officially wear trainers with those tailored trousers, so what are you waiting for. Make your life (and commute) easy in your new sports luxe outfit.

12. If all else fails, shut your eyes, stick your hand the wardrobe and put on the first thing that you grab
Who doesn't enjoy a bit of danger dressing in the morning? Close your eyes and let fate decide what you're going to wear.

You're welcome
