In praise of the Burberry trench
'I can't believe the cold weather is back when it looked like the sun had come out for good', said nobody British ever. But then, there is a silver lining to that ever present cloud, in that our lesser weather means our designers have really delivered the goods when it comes to looking cool in the cold. Would Harris Tweed have been invented somewhere sunny? Would Pringle of Scotland do such fine jumpers if there wasn't always a wind getting up?
And then there's the Burberry Trench, invented in 1912 because we just wanted a lightweight coat that wouldn't leave you soaked though when the heavens opened, and has spent the time since making its name as fashion's favourite coat. It makes as many appearances on the red carpet as it does in arrivals at LAX, because let's face it: it goes with everything, it's seriously practical, and it has a near-magic ability to transform the jeans and T-shirt you threw on to buy breakfast and a paper on a Saturday look like a classic style statement rather than a lazy cop-out.
