Starbucks has another fashion collaboration

by

Starbucks has followed up on its 2012 collaboration with Rodarte by enlisting designer Charlotte Ronson to create a limited-edition ceramic tumbler.

The cup, below, which will be available from June 25 in US stores, features a dreamy design depicting a distinctly un-caffeinated-looking woman gently dozing on a bed of flowers. (Maybe she just ordered a herbal tea...)

Ronson enjoys a higher profile in the US than she does in the UK and she has previously engaged in mainstream collaborations by working on a collection with JCPenney, the department store you’ll find in the malls of Middle America.

Rodarte, who, of course, are bigger fashion news than Ronson, created a range of pixelated-looking coffee paraphernalia for Starbucks including tote bags, cup holders and gift cards, rather than just a single cup so the coffee chain’s fashion ambitions seem to be becoming more modest.

Here in the UK, meanwhile, coffee chains have yet to tap into the symbiotic relationship that exists between coffee and the fashion industry (collections are constructed through coffees, cheeky fags, takeaways, late nights and more coffee) by enlisting a London designer to create coffee cups.

It’s an opportunity missed: if anything could increase our already frequent visits to Nero and Pret, it’s a fancy fashion collaboration.
