When T-shirts do the talking

by

If you're famous and frequently photographed, you needn't go on the record to tell the world what you think - simply slap your message across a t-shirt and allow onlookers to make of it what they will.

This way, they can stick to Kate Moss' oft-quoted Disraeli mantra, 'never complain and never explain', while hitting out at the haters, from paparazzi to ex-wives, with a smug, 'who, me? My lips are sealed', smirk.

Here's some of the best times celebrities have let their t-shirts do the talking...

Say what? Twerking is not a crime.
What it means: As a young girl in a limelight that shines ever brighter, thanks to images glaring from iEverything, Cara Delevingne no doubt feels scorn and scrutiny as sharply as her bum-wiggling contemporary Miley Cyrus. With this t-shirt though, worn  as she left Chanel's spring 2014 couture show recently, Cara said a big eff you to all the haters.

Say what? 'We love you Kate'.
What it means: When Kate Moss ran into a little cocaine-based trouble back in 2005, she was dropped as a model by many major labels, but Lee McQueen reminded us he was a true mate whatever happened

Say what? 'Team Aniston'.
What it means: Of all the people you wouldn't expect to wear a 'Team Aniston/Jolie' t-shirt, it's the man who inspired them by leaving one for the other. Of course, knocking out a few kids with Jolie proved exactly whose side he was really on, but at least he has a sense of humour about it. Let's just hope Jen sees the funny side too.

Say what? 'I am the American Dream'.
What it means: Ne'er was there a better sartorial demonstration of irony than when Britney: 'the bad years', a one time figurehead for aspirational small-town girls, showed us what the American Dream really looks like.

Say what? 'I want more privacy'.
What it means: Bjork has been known to punch paparazzi, but Eva Longoria takes more of a 'read it and weep' approach.

Say what? 'Choose Life'.
What it means: Wearing a Katharine Hamnett t-shirt in the Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go video, George Michael gave out a strong anti-AIDS message.

Say what? 'Sucks to be Solange'.
What it means: To be fair, life in the Knowles family seems pretty sweet whichever one of them you are, but not many people would choose to have Beyoncé, queen of the world, as their shadow-casting sister. Trust t-shirt gag-merchant Henry Holland to point that out.

Say what? 'Flick yer bean for Agyness Deyn'.
What it means: As her long-time BFF, Henry Holland has often shown his love for Agyness Deyn on the catwalk (not least casting her to close his shows), and by the looks of this t-shirt, he wants you to really like her too.

Say what? 'A low Vera'.
What it means: Julia Roberts' husband Daniel Moder had not long made said Vera his ex, so that's actually pretty low, Julia.

Say what? '58% say no to pershing'.
What it means: Katharine Hamnett was known for making political statements with her t-shirts, and you don't get stronger than spelling out your message to the prime minister, as she did in 1984 when she met Margaret Thatcher.

Say what? 'Have a coke and a smile'.
What it means: Considering Li-Lo's well known recreational habits, it might seem like she referring to something other than the fizzy beverage, and she knows it.

Say what? 'Rufus is a tit man'.
What it means: Well, considering Rufus is both gay and Martha's brother, who knows what she means. In actual fact the slogan refers to the title of her father Loudon's song of the same name, which describes baby Rufas' love of breast feeding.

Say what? 'Naomi hit me... and I loved it'.
What it means: The super-model was once sentenced to community service, for a BlackBerry throwing 'incident', but like the pro-diva she is, she's saying, 'give-a-s**t, I'm Naomi effing Campbell'.

Say what? 'Dude, where's my couture'.
What it means: In Paris and Nicole's pre-recession romp through middle America during their series, The Simple Life, they wanted you to know just how rich and excessive they really were - even when the couture was confiscated for farm duties.
