Where did all the icons go?
Christy Turlington is the new, old face of CK underwear. Kate Moss has just signed to St Tropez. Fran Cutler's still having it large, even as she turned 50 last month. And we're all still obsessed with them.
Why not – they're totally fabulous. They're fun and strong and amazing-looking, and we grew up wanting to be like them.
But doesn't it rather feel like there's no-one to take their place? This isn't a 'where are all the female role models?' conversation – that's a whole other issue, and one you'll find covered comprehensively elsewhere, sorry. It's a 'where did all the icons go?' conversation.
Because surely each generation throws up figures to dress by, if not to live by (don't try this, it will end badly) or figures whose image immediately represents the era they act as figureheads for. So where are ours?
There's a crop of brilliant models around at the moment, but none of them feel like the Supers did. There's Cara, of course, who is everywhere – and good on her! – but she feels (whisper it) a little young for us.
Are we the generation that icons forgot? Is it because we're all big kids pretending 1994 never ended? In which case, why I am writing this on a real computer instead of one whose screen is as deep as it is wide and takes 4 minutes to connect to a dial-up? Ah, nostalgia.
So I'm putting out a call for icons. Who represents our generation? And no, the answer can't be Kate Moss.
